Tired of earrings yet? Just one more quick tutorial (I promise!), then we are off to something else. Again, these earrings are made based on the first wood earring tutorial I shared. Let’s get started.
Supplies
- Silhouette Studio – or other design program
- Glowforge
- Resin – I used this two part pour on
- Clear packing tape
- Mica powder – I used this set
- Paper cups, souffle cups, craft sticks, syringes
- Grill lighter or heat gun
- Thin wood – Proofgrade Plywood or Hardwood both work well, as does Birch Plywood
- Earring hardware
Tutorial: Wood and Resin Earrings
- First, work your way through the tutorial above. After cutting, you’ll remove the masking but don’t attach your earring hardware. Position your earrings on a flat hard surface – I used a tile we had lying around the garage. I laid each earring on a piece of clear packing tape to prevent the resin from seeping through.
- Pour resin into each open space in your earring. I learned a few tricks along the way: 1) I mixed a large batch of resin in a paper cup, then poured small amounts into 2 ounce souffle cups. Then, I mixed mica powder with the resin in the souffle cups. This gave me the ability to make several different colored earrings using the same batch of resin. 2) A little bit of mica powder goes a long way – use it sparingly! 3) You can use a syringe or pour the resin into the open spaces. If you are pouring, a craft stick is helpful.
- Allow the resin to set for a few minutes, then use an open flame to pop bubbles that have formed. Did you know that the heat isn’t what pops the bubbles? It’s actually the carbon dioxide. So, if you don’t have a fire source handy – just exhale a few times on the resin.
- Allow the resin to set according to the instructions included. When completely dry, sand if necessary and add earring hardware.
Project Variations
Don’t stop at earrings! You can add resin to coasters, notebook covers, pendants, keychains, and more.
