I’m always amazed at how versatile my Glowforge is. I mean, one minute I’m etching glass, the next I’m cutting fabric, and today I’m engraving rocks. Yep, rocks! So, my 13 year old is working on a terrarium with some succulent plants and mosses in a glass container. She asked if I could engrave a few rocks for her – and of course I said yes. Today, I’ll share how I did it.
Before we get started, I used polished river stones. You can pick them up in a small bag from the craft store, in bigger bags from home improvement stores, or even here on Amazon. I wash and dried the rocks before engraving them.
Tutorial: Engraving Rocks
- Since rocks aren’t flat, I used honeycomb pins to put the rocks into a position where the top surface of the rock was as flat as possible. I did this for each rock that I engraved.
- I ran the engrave at full speed and full power.
- After the engrave, I again washed and dried the rocks. I may take a permanent marker and color in the engravings, but the pictures here show the rocks immediately after washing and drying. Now, we just wait for the teenager to finish her project!
Psst, if you like the font I used, grab it here.
